Why can’t a sock be 100% cotton?

If a sock was built with 100% of cotton fiber, its shape would not hold, therefore, it will not be adapted for everyday use. In its pure form, cotton does not have any elasticity, and, to maintain shape and durability, it needs to have a small percentage of Spandex or Lycra.

How can wool be a fabric that is worn year round?

Wool has this incredible feature of being very versatile and breathable. Thus, it can be worn in the warmest and coolest of climates. Wool repels moisture; but maintains a constant thermoregulation to keep your feet warm during winter and allowing your foot to breathe and stay cool during the summer.

How can a sock be non-elastic?

Socks that are non-elastic are very beneficial for those with circulation problems. A sock can be made without elastic by usually using a blend of cotton and nylon. The cottons allows for a soft and non-irritating texture, while the nylon adds the element of shape retention. In many non-elastic socks, the Nylon is in the foot of the sock, while the cotton is more from the ankle up.

Which sock is best to be worn in summer or warm climates?

When you are choosing a pair of socks in different climates and seasons, you consider your personal taste, as well as lifestyle. Usually, the best socks to be worn in warmer climates are those that provide the best breathability and those of natural fiber, such as Rayon, Cotton, and Wool.

Which type of sock is best to be worn in the winter and colder climates?

Most of the time, in colder climates, more synthetic fibers like Acrylic and Polyester are worn for warmth and comfort. Polyester offers a thermal barrier and will keep the feet warm. Wool is also a popular fiber for winter because of its thermal and moisture wicking features.

How is Bamboo different than Cotton?

First of all, Bamboo is a form of Rayon. It is a man-made fiber and is known to be breathable with excellent moisture wicking feature. On the other hand, Cotton is a natural fiber. Bamboo is organically grown and, after it is cut, it regenerates without the need of replanting and very little water. The main difference between Bamboo and Cotton is the time it takes to regrow.

What does “Mercerized” mean when referring to Mercerized Cotton or Wool?

Mercerization is a chemical treatment that is added to the fabric that gives the Cotton and Wool, a lustrous appearance. This particular treatment causes the fiber to swell, therefore shrinking the overall fabric size. It results in the fabrics becoming stronger, and easier to dye, creating a brighter color. Mercerized Cotton and Wool maintain the colour longer after wear and wash. Finally, it increases the overall longevity of the sock

What is the difference between shoe size and sock size?

When socks are made, they go through a step called “boarding”. In this operation, the sock is stretched (either dry or moist) over flat metal forms conforming to the desired sock shape and size. Then, it is pressed between two heated surfaces. This gives the socks its final shape and smooth appearance. Socks’ size is the size of the boards during this stage: when a pair of socks displays the shoe size, it simple refers to the size of the shoe you wear.
